Greenleaf question 2...

5. Mrs. May's family is very different from the Greenleafs. Mrs. May is diligent but her sons are not. Mrs. May's sons are sort of lazy because their mom achieved great amount of works by herself. On the other hand, Mr. Greenleaf's children are used to the harsh life. Even though Mrs. May's children seems like they have higher social status on the past and present, Mr. Greenleaf's children will be more successful in the future because they know what they are missing.

Greenleaf

Mrs. May is a hard working woman who has two children. She has achieved great amount of work although she is annoyed by Mr.Greenleaf many times. When her son said that he will get married to a girl like Mrs.Greenleaf who is fat and loose after Mrs. May dies because he will take her place and accomplishments. So, she goes to her lawyer next day and entail her property. I feel sympathy for Mrs. May, because it seems like that her children will betray her at some point.

A & P

By the author saying ”. . .my stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter.”, it indicates that the society doesn’t pay for your kindness or tolerance but they judge it by different point of view. In the story, the clerk loses his job only because he was trying to be kind to the three girls in the store. The quote shows how the world judges something not with the one’s purpose of the action.

Hills Like White Elephants

2. I think the girl is pregnant in the story, and the man is trying to make the girl to get an abortion. The man say to the girl like he doesn’t care if she is going to get the operation or not, but he repeats ‘it’s perfectly simple’, so I was able to find out that he actually wanted her to get the operation. The girl also felt like he is mentally pressuring her by words. She says, “Would you please please please please please please please stop talking?” (Arp and Johnson 214). The girl is loosing trust and is annoyed by the man.

Paul's Case

5. I definitely think that Paul is a developing character. At first, Paul seemed to be a corrupted student but he is loves arts and started to enjoy the upper class life. In fact, he goes to high class events even though he is not rich. He likes the atmosphere of the upper class life as he just enjoyed to be in it.

The Lesson

Sylvia is mad at Miss Moore because Miss Moore is trying to teach many things to Sylvia. Miss Moore seems to be very boring person, and I think Sylvia is feeling like anybody who teaches something to her is similar to Miss Moore. Sylvia has in her mind that whatever Miss Moore says is useless. In the book it says, "say Junebug, figuring Miss Moore crazy or lyin one" (Arp and Johnson 140). So, as Miss Moore tells something to Junebug found out that she was weird.

Everyday use

4. When Dee’s mother didn’t give her the quilts, it definitely indicates that two characters had permanent changes. Dee’s mother always did anything Dee wanted. But she is saying ‘no’ to her favor. Dee would be very confused because she now thinks that her mother has some power that can stop her. It is not temporary change because what she did was not usual thing that she does. When Dee’s mother said that she’s going to give the quilt to Maggie, Dee angrily says that her mom is putting the quilt into everyday use.

'The Destructor' question0

1. Through out the story, it was the boys’ point of view. So, I think the whole gang is definitely a protagonist because they came together and worked hard to break down Mr. Thomas’s house. Even though breaking down one’s house is very violent for most of people’s point of view, like I mentioned previously the story is the gang’s perspective. I believe antagonist should be Mr. Thomas’s house because the gang’s goal was to destroy the house. Mr. Thomas’s house came out to be the enemy of the gang. The conflict is when Trevor told other boys that they should keep breaking down the house while other boys thought they should stop and get out of the house.

questions

3. I think Tub is the most sympathetic character, because he had to deal with weight issues. When he shot Kenny, Frank was petrified for a while. In the context, the narrator says ‘Frank hadn’t moved since Kenny killed the dog’ (page 33). It shows that Frank is definitely not the most powerful character in the story. Throughout the story I felt Kenny is the most powerful character in the story. Kenny was desperate with power.

7.What is the purpose of the scene in which Frank and Tub stop at the tavern for food and coffee, leaving the wounded Kenny in the back of the truck? During their conversation, Frank analyzes his own character and expresses remorse. Are his insights and remorse genuine? Why or Why not?

An incident that changed my attitude

In these days, countries in the world are not equally living well, but abundant countries are suffering from hunger. Therefore, many of the people who have privileges are trying to support poor people. Over the summer, I went to Philippine to help poor people. There were twenty people who volunteered to go to Philippine. Most of them are my close friends, it was challenging but at the same time it was fun. Since Philippine is not clean enough to prevent local disease called ‘Deng-gi’ and malaria, it was extremely important to avoid mosquito bites. There were twenty people but unfortunately I was the unlucky one who got the local disease, Deng-gi. Through out the voluntary service, I not only felt that the world still has a big task to distribute the modern medical supplies to third world countries but also that thinking positive helps a person on every situations.
People having privileges in life have to look back at support people who don’t. The place my friends and I went was a tiny island called Bacolod. People living there don’t have any benefits of high technology. My friends and I stayed in Philippine for two weeks and had to build a small building for local children’s school. All we had were hoes and spades. We dig eight holes three feet cubically, and had pillar on them. We made cements by mixing pebbles, water and certain sands. It was very tough. If there were excavators, it would have been much easier. I felt modern technologies have to be spread out more.
Searching for things that one has to be aware of is essential step before going to a foreign country. I was aware of two serious diseases—malaria and Deng-gi. Both are infected by mosquitoes, and mosquito carrying malaria virus is active at night time while mosquito carrying deng-gi is active in morning. When a person is infected to deng-gi, 30% dies from an extremely bad fiber. The fiber starts three days after the mosquito bites one. Even though 30% looks really small percentage, having a possibility to die is scary.
Managing oneself with a positive attitude is crucial in order to have a solution. I had to suffer from fiber for last three days. When I found out that I am infected to deng-gi virus, I was shocked at first but I tried to think positive like telling myself that 70% is more than a half. Positive mind and medicine worked. I was cured perfectly after spending one week in hospital.
Although people in many countries can have medical service and high technology, there are some people in the world suffering because they don’t have those advantages. I learned that important for all of those who having privileges to know this fact. Also, thinking positive works better than it sounds like.
