Greenleaf question 2...

5. Mrs. May's family is very different from the Greenleafs. Mrs. May is diligent but her sons are not. Mrs. May's sons are sort of lazy because their mom achieved great amount of works by herself. On the other hand, Mr. Greenleaf's children are used to the harsh life. Even though Mrs. May's children seems like they have higher social status on the past and present, Mr. Greenleaf's children will be more successful in the future because they know what they are missing.

Greenleaf

Mrs. May is a hard working woman who has two children. She has achieved great amount of work although she is annoyed by Mr.Greenleaf many times. When her son said that he will get married to a girl like Mrs.Greenleaf who is fat and loose after Mrs. May dies because he will take her place and accomplishments. So, she goes to her lawyer next day and entail her property. I feel sympathy for Mrs. May, because it seems like that her children will betray her at some point.

A & P

By the author saying ”. . .my stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter.”, it indicates that the society doesn’t pay for your kindness or tolerance but they judge it by different point of view. In the story, the clerk loses his job only because he was trying to be kind to the three girls in the store. The quote shows how the world judges something not with the one’s purpose of the action.

Hills Like White Elephants

2. I think the girl is pregnant in the story, and the man is trying to make the girl to get an abortion. The man say to the girl like he doesn’t care if she is going to get the operation or not, but he repeats ‘it’s perfectly simple’, so I was able to find out that he actually wanted her to get the operation. The girl also felt like he is mentally pressuring her by words. She says, “Would you please please please please please please please stop talking?” (Arp and Johnson 214). The girl is loosing trust and is annoyed by the man.

Paul's Case

5. I definitely think that Paul is a developing character. At first, Paul seemed to be a corrupted student but he is loves arts and started to enjoy the upper class life. In fact, he goes to high class events even though he is not rich. He likes the atmosphere of the upper class life as he just enjoyed to be in it.
